Client: FDOT District 1
Polk County, Florida
Project Description:
E&R is providing CEI services for the replacement of the US 27/SR 60 interchange with a Single Point Urban Interchange, widening over a mile of both US 27 and SR 60 to 6-lanes with 7’ buffered bike lanes, sidewalks and closed drainage systems. US 27 pavement will be 9” plain concrete on 4” of Asphalt Base; two new ramps will be 8.5” plain concrete pavement. SR 60 is asphalt widening and mill & resurface with overbuild and shifted about 50’ north across US 27. Project additionally includes replacement of the SR 60 bridge over US 27 with a 264’, single span, weathering steel bridge as well as multiple types of retaining walls, a noise wall, full roadway lighting, new signals, two new ponds with impermeable liners, and frontage roads/realignment of local roads.
While the project is still underway, the Eisman & Russo team assisted the contractor in a revised construction plan to set the beams spanning US 27 over a weekend rather than weeks of nightly detours. The above time-lapsed video features this innovative approach which was an improvement to safety as traffic did not travel under temporarily braced beams and an enhancement to mobility because it was completed in 54 hours. Above and beyond, the E&R team developed a “white paper” outlining the benefits of the weekend closure for the FDOT Secretary to secure advance approval for the plan by the Governor’s Office.
